Key Aspects:
- A male guest jumped overboard Star Breeze reportedly following a marital dispute on January 19.
- The luxury cruise ship did conduct a search and local authorities are also involved.
- The guest has not yet been found but the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
An upset guest took the drastic step of jumping off Windstar Cruises’ Star Breeze in the early hours of Sunday, January 19, 2026 while the ship was sailing in the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia.
According to Tahiti-Infos, the 66-year-old male guest is an American citizen and reportedly took the drastic action following an argument with his wife. The incident happened at roughly 2 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Satellite tracking data confirms that Star Breeze spent some time searching the vicinity of the overboard incident, roughly 70 miles west-southwest of Fatu Hiva Island.
Local authorities were immediately alerted and a patrol boat from the French Navy arrived on site at about 8 a.m. to assist the search efforts.
The exact circumstances that led to the guest’s leap have not been revealed, and it is not known whether the jump may have been made in anger, frustration, or desperation. It is also unknown whether alcohol may have been a factor or if foul play could be involved.
The incident remains under investigation and local authorities are conducting interviews to determine what happened and if any charges will be filed.
To protect the privacy of those involved, the man’s name has not been released. This is standard procedure while an investigation is ongoing. Cruise Hive has also reached out to the cruise line and will update this post with any further details.

Star Breeze began her current 14-night sailing from Papeete, Tahiti on Thursday, January 15. The ship is visiting a range of amazing islands throughout French Polynesia and will return to Papeete on Thursday, January 29. There is no indication that her itinerary will require any adjustments.

The 9,975-gross-ton luxury ship was originally built as Seabourn Spirit before being sold to Windstar Cruises in 2015. She can welcome 312 guests onboard and is also home to 164 international crew members.
Will the Guest Be Found?
Though Star Breeze has been released from search efforts to continue on her voyage, it is possible that additional search and rescue boats and other resources may be used to continue the search efforts. It is not unusual for a cruise ship to leave the search area and continue its itinerary once local rescue personnel are on hand.
Because Star Breeze is not a taller ship and the waters in French Polynesia are reasonably warm in the mid-80s Fahrenheit at this time of year, it is possible that an individual in the water could survive for several days.
Overall survivability will depend on many factors, including whether the guest was injured after jumping, how rough the waters may be, and their overall physical fitness level and swimming skills.
Cruise Hive’s thoughts are with the guest’s wife and other family members and friends at this troubling time, as well as with the crew members on Star Breeze impacted by this unfortunate incident.
Many Reasons for Overboards
It’s always a sad situation when a cruise guest believes that jumping off a ship is the only solution to their difficulties.
Sometimes, such “voluntary overboards” aren’t voluntary at all, and might be the result of reckless behavior, such as sitting on or standing on ship railings. This type of behavior is strictly prohibited by all cruise lines.
On rare occasions, a violent altercation or even an unusual accident might result in an overboard incident.
The results of these events are rarely positive, but crew members and local authorities always treat each incident with professionalism and do all they can to find the individual safely.
