Legendary Cruise Captain Who Conquered the Northwest Passage to Retire

Captain Vorland

Key Aspects:

  • Crystal Cruises announced the upcoming retirement of Captain Birger J. Vorland.
  • Capt. Vorland serves as the master of Crystal Serenity.
  • He was captain of the ship when it sailed its pioneering Northwest Passage cruises.

When Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Serenity became the first luxury cruise ship to traverse the Northwest Passage in 2016 and 2017, a set of pioneering 32-day journeys from Alaska to New York, it was Captain Birger J. Vorland standing at the helm.

It was just one series of remarkable voyages Captain Vorland would experience in his nearly 48 years at sea, and now, Crystal Cruises has announced that the veteran mariner is headed toward retirement.

The luxury cruise line announced on January 27, 2026, that the well-known seafarer will retire at the conclusion of an 8-night cruise onboard Crystal Serenity departing from Marseille, France, on June 2, 2026.

Captain Birger represents the very soul of Crystal—excellence, curiosity, integrity and a profound respect for both guests and crew, said Cristina Levis, CEO of Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group, parent company of Crystal Cruises.

His leadership helped shape defining chapters of our history and elevated Crystal’s standing as a pioneer in luxury exploration. We are deeply grateful for his dedication and are honored to celebrate his extraordinary legacy,Levis added.

Captain Vorland joined Crystal Cruises 22 years ago, first serving aboard Crystal Harmony in 2003. Crystal Cruises has had a storied past; its former owner, Genting Hong Kong, went bankrupt and was liquidated in 2022.

That same year, Abercrombie & Kent bought Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, and relaunched the brand after a major renovation to both vessels. Crystal Harmony was sold to Japan-based NYK Cruises.

The captain had served as master of Crystal Harmony from 2003 to 2005. He then worked as vice president of nautical operations at Century City, in Los Angeles, before rejoining Crystal as master of Crystal Serenity in 2012.

Captain Navigated Through the Canadian Arctic

While Capt. Vorland undoubtedly has scores of incredible memories from his voyages around the globe, it seems his cruises along the Northwest Passage may be the most remarkable.

In 2016 and 2017, he sailed the ship through 900 miles of waterways from Anchorage, Alaska, to New York City, maneuvering alongside glaciers and in fjords in the Canadian Arctic, calling in Greenland before reaching New York. The Ernest Shackleton, an Antarctic research vessel, sailed with Crystal Serenity as an escort.

The voyages were possible thanks to reductions in Arctic sea ice due to climate change, as summer season melting enabled commercial ships to navigate the route.

Crystal has given me more memories than I could have imagined when I first stepped aboard in 2003. From world cruises to the adventures of the Northwest Passage, my time here has been filled with moments I will carry with me forever, said Birger J. Vorland, captain of Crystal Serenity.

But what I will miss most are the people, the crew and the guests who return time and again, creating a true sense of family. When I step ashore for good in June, I do so with immense pride, gratitude and an appreciation for a life spent at sea,Capt. Vorland added.

Crystal Cruises is planning a set of special celebrations to mark the captain’s retirement, which will include commemorations of his career. Details of the events have not yet been disclosed. His final cruise from Marseille in June 2026 will feature calls in Spain, Italy, and Monaco, and end in Rome.

Crystal Cruises recently ordered the construction of two ships, with the first due to enter service in 2028. Both will be built by Fincantieri and accommodate 690 guests.
